Swim Lessons (Group)

Our swim instructors teach progressive, skills-based swim lessons for all ages, from infants to seniors. COMMON QUESTIONS & INFORMATION FOR SUCCESS IN SWIM LESSONS
- First Day Expectations: Please make sure your children come dressed and ready t0 get in the pool 5 minutes prior to the class start time. Check in with the Front Desk where they can direct you to the pool waiting area. You will be met by an Aquatics staff member to help guide you to your child’s class. The instructors will evaluate the participant’s swimming ability on day one. If the participant needs to be moved up or down a level, the instructor will notify the Aquatics Director to move the participant to the appropriate level.
- May I Observe my Child’s Class? Yes! All parents are encouraged to watch the swim lessons, though we ask all parents to sit on the bleachers on the pool deck as this removes additional distractions. If your presence distracts your child, the instructor or deck supervisor may ask you to wait outside the pool area to maximize your participant’s learning process and not interfere with the class. Parents may also wait in the lobby, but are not to leave the YMCA premises during lessons.
- We Cannot Attend Class- Can We Schedule a Make-Up Lesson? There are no make-ups for missed classes whether your child is sick, out of town or unable to attend. Your child may not attend a class at another time slot in place of a missed class as there are guidelines for a safe instructor: participant ratio.
- What Happens if the Pool Closes Due to Weather or Pool Issues? If there is thunder or lightning within five miles, the pool will be closed for thirty minutes from the last incidence. Make ups will be offered if time allows. If the pool closes for chemical or maintenance issues make ups will be offered if time allows. Credits will not be issued for weather related cancellations. All pool cancellation notices will be sent out via email- please check every day before lessons for any updates or cancellations.
- How Long Will it Take My Child to Learn to Swim? Children progress at their own speed, and it is common for a swimmer to remain at the same level for a complete year of classes before advancing. A child’s self esteem, confidence, and strength development are all important aspects in determining progression to the next level.
