Karina

When Karina and her family joined the Foothills Area YMCA in 2023, they were searching for more than just a place to work out—they were searching for support, stability, and a little breathing room in a life that had grown incredibly full.

“I had triplets in 2021 and all of that—exercise, a break, an uninterrupted shower—was a rarity for me,” Karina shared. “We went from four to seven kids very quickly, and that created a lot of stress. I needed time with my older kids without us getting climbed on, and we all thought the Y was the best solution.” From the fitness center and pool to after-school care and group classes, Karina and her family quickly found themselves immersed in the many programs the Y offers. But it wasn’t just about activities—it was about healing, connection, and hope. “Financially, we weren’t in a great spot. The triplets were a HUGE surprise, and I was overwhelmed and exhausted,” Karina said. “I’m a student, and my schooling was in jeopardy because of how demanding life had become. We don’t have any family near here, so we couldn’t ask anyone for help.”

That’s where the Y made a difference.

“The childcare has allowed me to take time for myself in the mornings while the triplets get to play and socialize with children their own age. I can do schoolwork, shower peacefully, exercise, or just find my peace,” she explained. “In the afternoons, I’ve been able to bond with my older kids again and remind them they’re just as loved and important.”

Thanks to a scholarship, Karina and her family were able to access all of this without added financial strain. “That was the biggest relief of all. Paying my portion doesn’t break me so much that I can’t come, and my entire family has benefited tremendously in more ways than I can count.” Since joining, Karina has noticed real changes in her family’s well-being. “My mental health immediately improved. The triplets’ behavior got better with socialization, and my older kids are closer to me again. They’ve found stress-relieving activities and are bonding with each other better, too.” Looking ahead, Karina is excited about continuing her wellness journey with her husband. “I’m in physical therapy, and I’ve learned things I can do now that won’t make my health worse. I’m excited to try.”

But perhaps the most powerful part of their YMCA experience is the sense of belonging. “Everyone is so kind and welcoming,” she said. “That’s what I love most about our Y community.”

Karina’s story is a beautiful reminder of how the Y supports families—not just physically, but emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

Amanda

For Amanda, joining the Foothills Area YMCA in December 2019 was the first step in a life-changing journey. Before becoming a member, she struggled with obesity, high blood pressure, and undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. But through her commitment to fitness and the unwavering support of the Y community, she has transformed her health, confidence, and quality of life.

“These programs have changed my life,” Amanda shares. “In the past year and a half, I’ve invested more diligently in my health. My blood pressure is down, I discovered I had type 2 diabetes and got my A1C down without medication, and I’ve dropped enough weight that I went from a 3X to an XL.”

Amanda found her stride in spin class, a workout she initially found challenging but quickly grew to love. One of her proudest milestones was earning her first 12 Days of Fitness shirt in 2021, a moment that marked a shift in her commitment to health. In 2024, she pushed herself further by tackling her first spin class during the Healthy Habits Challenge. “By the end of 2024, I needed a 12 Days of Fitness shirt two sizes smaller—and had room to spare! I used to feel like a workout was work. Now I look forward to it and enjoy cycling!”

The encouragement from the Y’s staff and community played a crucial role in keeping her motivated. “When I was just starting, the staff were my biggest cheerleaders. I looked forward to telling them my progress—and I still do.”

Amanda’s next big goal? Reversing her type 2 diabetes diagnosis. “I’m hoping to hear my doctor say I no longer qualify as a type 2 diabetic. And I know I can get there!”

For anyone considering joining the Y, Amanda has one message: “You won’t regret it. From swimming or yoga to cardio machines and cycling, there’s something for everyone at every level. Start with a step. Soon you’ll be taking 10!”

Reflecting on her journey, Amanda says, “It truly has saved my life. I joined pre-COVID when everything shifted. I was slow to start, but I have gained so much more than better health. The gains in my confidence and quality of life are immeasurable, and I’m so grateful for the kindness and encouragement I’ve received as a member of the Y family.”

Amanda’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and the life-changing impact of prioritizing health. The Y is more than just a place to work out—it’s a place where lives are transformed, one step, one class, and one milestone at a time.

Leah

When Leah joined the Foothills Area YMCA as a charter member, she was facing significant health challenges—overweight and preparing for multiple major surgeries, including knee and shoulder replacements. But through dedication, determination, and the support of the Y community, she has transformed her life in ways she never imagined.

Leah’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring. Over the years, she has participated in a variety of programs, including water aerobics, chair yoga, and working out in the gym. These activities have played a vital role in her recovery from five major surgeries and have helped her lose an incredible 132 pounds.

“I am now able to go traveling and do everyday activities that I could not do before,” Leah shares. The improvements in her fitness and overall well-being have given her a renewed sense of freedom—allowing her to live life fully and embrace new experiences.

One of the most meaningful moments in her time at the Y was rejoining the community after COVID. Like many, she missed the sense of connection and support that the Y provides, and returning to Nancy’s water aerobics class became a highlight of her routine.

Now at 66, Leah finds joy in staying active and healthy. Whether it’s spending time with her partner and fur babies or setting new wellness goals—like losing another 30 pounds—she remains motivated to keep pushing forward.

Her advice to anyone considering joining the Y? “Join today! Don’t miss another day to be healthy and happy.”

For Leah, the Y is more than just a place to exercise—it’s a community where she continues to learn, grow, and thrive. And with every milestone she reaches, she proves that it’s never too late to take charge of your health and live the life you deserve.

Jessica

When Jessica first joined the Y, she was facing significant challenges with her health and lifestyle. “I was very overweight and not active at all,” she shared. Determined to make a change, Jessica immersed herself in the Y’s programs and hasn’t looked back. She now participates in classes like Body Pump, Step, and Functional Fitness, as well as running and walking on the treadmill. The Y has become a major part of her life, with Jessica attending 5-6 days a week. “My entire lifestyle has changed,” she said. “The Y is a huge part of who I am now.”

One of Jessica’s most empowering moments came early in her journey: “The first time I ran on the treadmill, I couldn’t believe I could do it. It was such an empowering experience.” Since then, she’s achieved incredible milestones, including losing 85 pounds, lifting weights, and doing activities she never thought possible. “I used to get short of breath just running errands,” she recalled.

Now, she feels strong, confident, and inspired by her progress. Jessica credits her motivation to “seeing the results, the atmosphere in the classes, and the gym itself.” Looking ahead, she’s excited to focus on toning and reaching new fitness goals. Her advice for others? “Whatever you’re looking for in a gym, the Y will have it!”

Genie

"When I started here at the YMCA, I was blown away with all the options offered in Group Exercise classes! All of the instructors are awesome! I think Pam and I have the most in common. She spends time with us seniors to ensure we are doing everything correctly and that we stay safe. I love Pam's positive outlook and how she's always energetic and smiling. Pam's classes keep us dancing and having fun. Sometimes I forget I'm at the gym! I feel young again in her Dumbbells and Drumsticks class! If you haven't had the pleasure of taking one of her classes, please do. You'll leave feeling so much stronger, healthier, and happier!"

Jo

"My family has a history of heart problems. With that concern in mind, I became a charter member when the local YMCA opened. I spend from 1 to 4 hours a day at the Y. I enjoy the variety of Group Exercise classes and the benefits I have experienced. I am happy to say that my heart is much stronger, joint mobility has increased and joint pain has decreased! Having been a cheerleader and very active in my youth, I really missed being fit and having so much energy! It feels great to have improved stamina and move more freely! As I age, I'm so glad the YMCA opened here and my joints thank you!"

"Upon completion of my chemotherapy treatment, I was over the moon happy. The cancer was gone and there was reason to believe in the future. There was a problem, however, in that I was so out of shape that recreational activities like hiking and paddling as well as work around our home was just too difficult. My wife and I decided to join the YMCA and during the tour we saw the Livestrong group working out. Well, we joined up and ...I got my strength back. More than that, my mental outlook was also improved, new friendships were developed, and I had the confidence to canoe/kayak on longer day trips. Indeed, I met my goal by paddling 10 miles on Lake Jocassee! The Livestrong program is a wonderful tool for building strength and overall well-being."

Betty

"I am thankfully a long time cancer survivor. I am a member of the Y and heard about the Livestrong program through advertisement there. What I enjoyed most was meeting people in different stages of their treatment and recovery. I loved working out together as a group and just encouraging one another. Laughing, talking and working hard together. Come by and say hi if you see me on the treadmill, bike or rowing machine."

Lou

"I am a breast cancer survivor and I heard about the Livestrong program through my doctor. I decided to join after my husband died last year from cancer. My physical and emotional body was a mess. At the Foothills YMCA in Seneca, I found healing from the staff and fellow members. At the end of the 12 weeks I was feeling much stronger and had lost 10 pounds. My spiritual health was an unexpected positive also! I have joined and I am continuing my excercise. It is a part of my life now and I’m so thankful for it."

Glenn

"What I like about being a member of the Foothills Area YMCA is that it is like being back at high school but only the good parts. If you show up, you pass. Everyone is a star student, plus you are an automatic athlete.

It is one big gang of local people joined together to improve their lives and their health. You are there because you want to be there. No one makes you go, and it is always fun to be with good people.

The classes vary from “young at heart” to “young and hard”, and of course, there is Rock Steady. From bar bells, bikes, to Pilates mats, it just depends on what intensity that you want with some tasty tunes. Let’s not forget the incredible instructors, and excellent staff.

If swimming is your thing, the Y has a 6-lane, heated swimming pool. From swimming laps to water aerobics, and organized swim meets, the Y will meet all your swimming needs, and of course, lifeguards are always on duty.

The FAYMCA is the best thing that happened to Seneca since the Rec Department was started many years ago. So if you are looking for a safe and clean place to exercise and be with friends, the FAYMCA is better than being back at high school and a lot more fun!"
