Swim Team Signing Day

May 13, 2025

Chelsea Burkhart and Jay Owens have set an inspiring example by continuing their academic and athletic journeys at Cleveland State University and Converse University. Their commitment, perseverance, and love for their sport have left an incredible mark on our swim team, and we could not be prouder. As they move forward into this exciting new chapter, we know they will carry with them the same passion and determination that made them leaders here.

The success of our athletes is a reflection of their hard work and the supportive community that has cheered them on. Chelsea and Jay embody the spirit of excellence both on and off the field, and their futures are undeniably bright. We’re excited to see all they will achieve and are honored to have been a part of their journey.

Congratulations—you will always have a home with us!

Spring Highlights

May 2025

The Foothills Area YMCA Swim Team just finished their 2024-2025 short course season which goes from September through the beginning of April. They had thirteen athletes compete at the Upper Southeast Regional YMCA Short Course Championship Meet in Lynchburg, Virginia at the end of March. The team saw over 50% lifetime best times and over 80% season best times. Two swimmers made three new YMCA National cuts between them and all of the 13&over swimmers made at least one final during the meet.

They also had five athletes compete at the YMCA National meet in Greensboro, NC as the last meet of the short course season. Just under 1,200 swimmers from across the country came down to North Carolina to swim in this 5 day meet. Jay Owens made the final in the 200 back being one of the top 24 YMCA swimmers in the event. He also swam fast enough to make the USA Swimming Futures qualifying time in the 200 back. He will swim at that meet in July with other National level swimmers. This is the first time Audrey Burkhart, Mary Greene, and Ellie Russell competed in the short course YMCA National meet. They learned a lot about themselves and overcame nerves in this massive meet as 14 year olds. Lastly, Chelsea Burkhart came home with a huge honor. She and one male swimmer were chosen out of all the graduating senior swimmers at YMCA Nationals as recipients of the Adolf Kiefer Youth Character Award. Chelsea's dedication to competitive swimming, her academic excellence, and her demonstration of the YMCA's core values make her the perfect athlete to receive this award, and the Foothills Area YMCA is so proud of her accomplishments!

Next up for the swim team is summer swim league, more YMCA meets, and long course swimming for our USA Swimming athletes. Lots more action for them in the coming few months!

Spring Break Camp

March 17-21, 2025

Our Spring Break Camp was a week full of fun, creativity, and adventure! From March 17-21, we welcomed 25 campers to our campus, where they enjoyed a variety of activities both indoors and outdoors.

One of the highlights of the week was our field trip to Sweet Retreat in Walhalla. Campers had a blast choosing between a round of mini-golf on the newly refurbished course or an exciting game of laser tag. Of course, no visit to Sweet Retreat would be complete without a delicious ice cream treat!

With beautiful weather on our side, we spent plenty of time outside playing group games, enjoying the playground, drawing with sidewalk chalk, and participating in outdoor activities. Inside, campers unleashed their creativity by painting inspirational messages on rocks to hide around campus, crafting dragonfly magnets, experimenting with watercolor and salt art, and building bird feeders to welcome spring.

Each day, campers gathered in the Zone to relax and play cards, build with Legos and marble runs, color, and challenge each other in air hockey and foosball. It was a fantastic week filled with laughter, friendship, and new experiences!

We can’t wait for our next camp adventure!

An Enchanting Morning

February 22, 2025

Our Princess Party on February 22 was a magical morning filled with music, dancing, and unforgettable memories! With 40 kids and their parents, we had nearly 90 people join in the fun. The excitement kicked off with a lively dance led by our enchanting princess, followed by a magical sing-along with Elsa. Rapunzel then led a royal parade, guiding the little princes and princesses to a special meet-and-greet. Each child had the chance to take pictures with their favorite princesses and get their crowns signed, making it a truly fairytale-worthy experience!

February 2025 Highlights

SDOC Program Highlight Video

Fall 2024

Check out this highlight video of Northside Elementary School’s 3rd graders participating in our SDOC Safety & Survival Swimming Program last fall!

This program equips students with essential self-rescue skills and basic water safety to help prevent drowning. Drowning remains a serious risk, particularly for youth and underserved communities, but these tragedies are preventable. Our vision is that everyone should have the opportunity to learn how to stay safe in and around water.

First Swim Meet of 2025

January 17, 2025

Our Swim Team hosted another swim meet at McHugh Natatorium on the Clemson University campus January 17th-19th. They brought 150 swimmers from 5 different teams together to compete in a two and a half day USA Swimming competition. Jay Owens broke the team record in the 15-18 boys 200y breaststroke, they had six swimmers qualify for the SC Swimming state meet in an additional 10 races, and overall our swimmers went 63% lifetime times. Our athletes got loud at the end of every session cheering on our relays to victory in some very exciting races. What a phenomenal showing for the 38 athletes representing the Foothills Area YMCA.

FAY has two more regular season meets coming up and then they enter our Championship season which is a gauntlet of five meets over eight weeks. First up are the SC Swimming Senior and Age Group Championship meets where they have 16 athletes qualified to swim with the best that SC Swimming has to offer. More updates on those meets are coming up next month!
